In the In-Between
In the days between Christmas and New Year’s, it seems there is an intrinsic opportunity to pause and reflect on the year that was and to consider the year that is about to begin. A space between. As we look backward it is easy to see where we have fallen short, or where things have not gone as we had hoped or planned. And as we look forward there can be a mix of hope for change; to be or do better. Yet, there can also be a sense of shame or guilt for the ways that we have fallen short in previous years. This can be a less-than-inspiring way to end the year and begin the next.
Perhaps another option might be helpful, more constructive, and certainly more redemptive. This other option would be to choose to look back and look forward, sitting in the presence of and lovingkindness of Jesus.
When we choose to look on our own, it is easy to hear the accusing, condemning voice of the enemy who speaks of where we have fallen short with a goal to paralyze and immobilize the person of God from trying to go deeper in Christ and from growing as a person loved by God.
When we sit with Jesus to reflect on these shortcomings, missed opportunities, and choices that are out of alignment with God’s ways, the Holy Spirit speaks to us in a different way. Rather than speaking with condemnation and shame, the Spirit gently convicts, and through His kindness leads us into repentance. As we respond in trust and surrender to Jesus’ love we grow in intimacy with Him, receiving fresh starts as He leads us in the way of life everlasting.
King David demonstrates this reflective practice that leads to renewal by choosing to bring his life before the Lord, giving Him access to his soul to do this loving work.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
As this year draws to a close and you prepare to step into a new year, choose to sit with Jesus, looking back with Him at the year that was, and the year that is to come. What needs to be addressed and dealt with? Where have you come out of alignment with Him and His ways of living and thinking? In what areas of your life and walk with Him is He inviting you to go deeper, walk closer, or trust Him more for this new year?
Then commit your ways and these ideas and plans to Him as you prepare to start 2026!
Know that you are loved
